How to make more money with a smaller list

Mon, 27 October 2008 in Free Training, List Building

A little over a year ago we had one of our biggest launches. We grossed over $250,000 in sales in only one week.

This was largely due to the powerful affiliates and JV partners that we had promoting the product.

During that week I learned a very important lesson that I want to share with you today.

You see, I held a contest to see who could make the most sales in that week. The winners received cash prizes and bragging rights, as well as promotions from my list.

Two of my JV partners really battled it out for the top spot. It was a close match-up, as the one who won did so by only one sale.

They both did roughly about $20,000 of sales, so you can see how incredibly close it was.

But here is the interesting thing - the person who won had a list 10 times bigger than the person in second place!

The winner’s list was approximately 100,000 in size, while the second place JV partner had a list of about 10,000 at that time.

Isn’t that incredible? Haven’t you always heard that the money is in the list? Haven’t you heard that you could make $X per month per subscriber? How come that didn’t factor in here?

As time has moved on I have been able to do a lot of cross promotions with other JV partners (i.e. I promote your product to my list and you promote my product to your list). These are incredibly powerful, and if you aren’t doing them, then you are missing out on a lot of revenue.

However, there is something I was doing wrong for quite a while.

Somebody would email me and say “Hey Matthew, interested in doing a cross promotion? My list size is 50,000.”

I would then say “Sure! However, my list size is only 25,000.”

That person would then say “No problem. I’ll email once, and you email twice!”

That sounded like a good deal, so we did it. However, most of the time, I sent them far more visitors (and sales) than they would send me!

In one email I would send them 1,000 visitors, while in their one email they would send me 200, sometimes 300, or maybe as high as 500 if I was lucky.

When I realized that this kept happening, I adopted a new line. Instead of saying “My list is this big, and your list is this big” I would say “I’ll send you 1,000 visitors and you send me 1,000 visitors.”

It’s interesting to see the reaction of JV partners when they realize that I can do it quicker than they can with a smaller list.

So what is the point of all this?

The money is NOT in the list!

The money is in the QUALITY of the list.

And that brings me to one last case study.

His name is Michael Rasmussen, and he is a “smaller list, bigger results” kind of guy.

He doesn’t believe in making huge lists just so you can say yours is bigger than theirs (I can show you how to build a 500,000 person list in one day, but it won’t do you any good).

He has been the top affiliate for many of the big-name gurus out there, yet he does not have the biggest list.

He has learned how to create a list of buyers, rather than just a list a of no-good-doers.

And now he’s made a video that you can watch to learn how he did it.

The secret to making $10,000 per month

Wed, 22 October 2008 in Membership Sites

I want to share a secret with you that will allow you to eventually be making $10,000 per month (or more if you like).

Now let me be clear, I don’t want to show you how to make $10,000 in one month, I want to show you how to make $10,000 per month.

There is a big difference there.

I have been able to make over $250,000 in one month, and yet had my worst year ever financially.

My first year saw a $95,000 month, and yet I fell into debt only 3 months later after being hammered by the government for taxes.

You see, the trick isn’t learning how to make huge sums of money all at once, the trick is to learn how to make consistent, residual profits.

You know, the kind that keep coming month after month without you having to do huge launches all the time.

If you read my post on the website that saved my business then you’ll already know that I love sites that charge a monthly subscription fee.

The concept works extremely well, no matter what the economic situation is.

Let’s do a case study.

Let’s imagine that you start a membership site that provides some sort of information on an ongoing basis, and it only costs $19.95 per month, and offers a $1 trial to get started.

Almost anybody can afford $19.95 per month, so this should be able to work in any market (which it does).

Now, let’s say you go out and work hard and only get 100 new members in your first month. This shouldn’t be too hard as one or two good JV partners could accomplish this for you.

How much money did you make?

$19.95 x 100 = $1995 - almost $2000 in your first month - not bad!

However, it gets better.

Let’s assume that you work just as hard (and well) and get another 100 members the next month.

How much money did you make?

$19.95 x 100 = $1995 - almost $2000 again!

But wait, the 100 members from the first month are charged again, making you another $1995, for a total of $3990!

Then the next month you get another 100 members, totaling 300 members.

How much money did you make?

$19.95 x 300 = $5985!

We could stop there and just make $5,985 per month (I’m sure most of you would love to be making that much - would that be enough for you to quit your job?).

Of course we could continue. After 6 months you would have 600 members, which would be making you $11,970 per month, well over our $10,000 per month goal.

Now, some of you might have caught a slight flaw in this - what about people who cancel? Well, there will be cancellations, but the trick is to make a membership site where you get more new members than you lose them, thus always increasing your monthly income.

Here is what you need in order to harness this powerful method:

1. Inexpensive software to run your membership site
2. Content
3. Traffic

That’s it! It really isn’t more complicated than that.

The hardest part for most people is creating the website, as it provides the most technical challenges.

If you have problem with HTML, PHP, MySQL, FTP, and all those fancy acronyms, and you would like to still be able to make a membership site without forking out $2000+ to a web designer and $5000+ to a programmer, then you’ll want to check this out:

www.MembershipBase.com

You can start for only $1 and have your own membership site up within just a few minutes.

Trust me, this is the secret to how I stay in business and make the money I make. I love product launches, but the real stability in my business comes from membership sites.

Push Button Residual Income

Tue, 21 October 2008 in Membership Sites

I want to share something with you that is a little personal, and somewhat embarrassing.

I started my online business about 4 years ago. In my first year, I grossed $150,000. My second year saw that double to $300,000.

My third year saw that double again to $600,000. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

Well, to tell you the truth, the third year was a very hard year for me financially.

You might wonder how that might have happened, seeing as how I was generating more cash than my first two years combined.

It all happened around May of that year when I did a launch that generated over $250,000 within a two week period, most of it profit.

I was so excited that I decided to super-charge my business by growing and hiring new employees. Well, I grew a little too fast
for the strength that I had, and the payroll expenses combined with all the extra expenses of equipment and other overhead grew
so high that I actually went into a great deal of debt.

I knew how to generate money, but I wasn’t very experienced in managing a larger business.

By the end of the year I had to lay off most of these employees simply because I could not afford to keep the business going at that rate.

It was a very difficult time, considering how it was just before Christmas that I had to do this.

As I sat back in my desk exasperated, having had several months of financial stress, I started to look over my financial reports to see how I could start digging myself out of this deep hole.

That’s when I discovered it.

I had one website that I hadn’t even thought about that had saved my business.

It was working so quietly, so “behind the scenes”, that I hadn’t even considered what it was doing for me.

That website was generating between $5,000 and $10,000 per month consistently with hardly any work on my part.

It didn’t generate $100,000 one month and then $0 the next. It wasn’t getting tens of thousands of visitors per day. It was
simply providing a service to people, and they were doing something that I now base my business around:

** They were paying me a monthly fee **

It was only $19.95 per month, but because they were on a recurring payment plan they provided the stability to my business that allowed me to survive the most difficult times I had ever faced.

That’s when I realized the key - residual income.

Now you can build your own residual stream that will bring you thousands of dollars per month automatically, and you can start for only $1:

I’ll tell you even more about it tomorrow, giving you some more case studies.
